John Nash Prints

John Nash Limited Edition Prints

John Nash (1893 - 1977) Limited Edition Fine Art Prints

John Nash, born in London, was the younger son of lawyer William Harry Nash and the younger brother of fellow artist Paul Nash. After school at Wellington College, he worked briefly as a journalist. Whilst his older brother was studying at The Slade he discouraged young John from taking formal art training but encouraged him to develop his skills in drawing and painting.
When John was young the Nash family moved from urban London into Buckinghamshire with its rolling hills, fields with hedgerows which stimulated his interests and increased his awareness of many of the subjects which were to dominate his later work. John had a successful first exhibition with Paul at the Dorien Leigh Gallery in 1913 and others followed. Despite poor health he enlisted in 1916 and became an official war artist from 1918. His most famous work from that period 'Over the Top' now hangs in the Imperial War Museum. Between the wars he taught at the Ruskin School of Art and later the Royal College of Art where he became friends with Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden. He was again appointed an official War Artist in the Second World War. After the war he moved to a village near Great Bardfield as part of the community of artists living in that part of Essex, and was awarded a CBE in 1964. In 1967 he was awarded a retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy - the first such honour for a living artist. Much troubled by arthritis in later years, he died in Colchester in 1977.
